The militia officer is in a filthy temper when he turns up with a van full of men to deal with an unauthorised public meeting, as Alexei Grigoryev can testify. Being the only person in attendance, Grigoryev receives the full blast of the official’s interrogation and it is apparent that none of his answers satisfy the policeman in charge. The hall is locked and in darkness, until the militia let themselves in. Has he made a mistake? Alexei Grigoryev is consulting the note he has taken from an entry in Dolgoruky’s diary and assumes the meeting has been postponed or cancelled. Not so extraordinary. But the militia officer is not easily placated. His men planned to watch a football match on television and are as mad as hell with him. More importantly, the officer’s superiors will be furious for the overtime payments due to his crew for the abortive call-out. He demands to know from an apologetic Grigoryev why he has wasted their time.

There is no apology forthcoming, however, for Robert Coulthard, who also made his way to the hall and is observing from the cover of a shop doorway as the wagon full of armed men pull up and proceed to batter down the locked door. This commotion alerted the hall’s caretaker who proceeded to berate the militia for their actions while denying any meeting had been booked for that evening. Further, he remonstrated with the chief officer that he never allowed any illegal gatherings to take place there.

Also observing the scene, and Coulthard, is a tall, athletic-looking man with bristly hair, who melts away as the police wagon drives off.
